In the afterglow of his influential Cause And Effect cassette label and distribution network, audio artist Hal McGee dedicated himself to publishing the Electronic Cottage International Magazine, a six-issue chronicle begun in 1989 devoted to the home-recording culture rising from the embers of the post-punk DIY era and mail-art. More than a magazine, it was a nexus - part forum, part battleground - where artists, tape labels, and sonic outsiders exchanged manifestos, practical knowledge, and diverse perspectives. Across more than 400 pages, its run now endures as a living archive of a community in flux, caught between analog devotion and an uncertain digital horizon.
Minóy moved through this world not as a peripheral figure but as a signal presence. He contributed directly to Electronic Cottage, placing several full-page advertisements. In its final issue (#6), he became the cover feature under the title “The Musical Majesty Of Minóy.” There, writer Jack Jordan articulates the singular force of his work: “Why is listening to the music of Minóy a special occasion for me? Quite simply, it is powerful, distinctive, inimitable, and wipes out everything else cluttering the brainwaves by demanding concentration and personal involvement.”
The six issues have now been gathered into a single hardcover volume, Electronic Cottage - The Complete Collection, published by Korm Plastics in the Netherlands and available in the United States through Soleilmoon, an artifact preserving the pulse of a moment when sound traveled hand-to-hand, tape-to-tape, and imagination to imagination.
